The First All Ireland Poc Fada in 1961 Coutesy of Eamonn Callan ©2010
"An tAthair" Fr. Pól Mac Seáin has provided us with an historic visual record of the First All Ireland Final in 1961 in the form of a 5mm movie. Incidently 1961 was the year that RTE began televising Gaelic Games.
In 2011 we celebrated the 50th anniversary of this great championship; it was also the 30th year of consecutive competition. For all who are familiar with the Poc Fada over the years it has been defined as two distinct eras,
- “The Early Years” from 1959 through to 1969
- “The Revival” from 1981 to the present.
The above video is a priceless archive of the “Early Years” of the All Ireland Competition and of a community who strived to ensure that the event would prosper, below is a photograph from 1961 of the first All Ireland’s organisers and “Meithels”.
